What do the UNGPs require?

Since 2011, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) have become the global authoritative standard for preventing and addressing the risk of human rights impacts linked to business activity. The UNGPs apply to all businesses in all sectors. Under the ‘Protect, Respect, Remedy’ Framework that underpins the UNGPs, it is the duty of businesses to respect human rights.  There are many reasons why businesses should demonstrate how they are protecting human rights, particularly with the increasing demand for transparency in supply chains and rise in forced labour globally.

The passing of the UK Modern Slavery Act in 2015 has also  put the spotlight back on businesses and transparency in supply chains.

Forced labour and human trafficking is a global problem that exists in every region of the world and in every economy. It affects both domestic and international markets.

Why should business bother?

Businesses have to consider how they manage the risk of human rights abuses and whether they will take a preventative or proactive approach to tackling modern slavery in both their organisations and supply chains.
