Modern Slavery Act Statement Workshop in Tokyo

The end of the 2017 financial year is likely to be approaching.he UK Modern Slavery Act 2015 (MSA) requires businesses operating in UK (with a turnover of £36 million or more) to publish an annual modern slavery statement within the six months after the end of the organisation’s financial year. In compliance with the MSA, companies are required to show the steps they have taken to eradicate modern slavery and human trafficking and demonstrate improvements on their previous MSA Statement. To support Japanese companies who are requested to do so, Ardea International and Caux Round Table Japan will be hosting a joint workshop in Tokyo on Friday 2nd March 2018.

Modern Slavery Act Statement Workshop in Tokyo will be held on Friday 2nd March 2018.

The end of the 2017 Financial Year is likely to be approaching.The UK Modern Slavery Act 2015 (MSA) requires businesses operating in UK (with a turnover of £36 million or more) to publish an annual modern slavery statement within the six months after the end of the organisation’s financial year. In compliance with the MSA, companies are required to show the steps they have taken to eradicate modern slavery and human trafficking and demonstrate improvements on their previous MSA Statement. To support Japanese companies who are requested to do so, Ardea International and Caux Round Table Japan will be hosting a joint workshop in Tokyo on Friday 2nd March 2018.

*Ardea International and Caux Round Table announced their partnership in 2017, and this will be the first jointly hosted workshop with Colleen Theron in Japan.

Participants companies will receive 1-2 pages written feedback on their MSA Statement. MSA Statements will need to be submitted by Wednesday 14th February 2018. Please note that 1) a draft of MSA Statement OR one from the previous year can be submitted, but NOT the BOTH, 2) wherever possible, please submit drafts both in English and Japanese, 3) a section of your MSA Statement may be shared among participants (as a case to show how to meet the legal requirement, but will not be disclosed to the public), 4) companies who do not submit the draft/previous MSA Statement can also attend the workshop, but the feedback cannot be provided and the cost cannot be deducted, 5) the workshop will be held under Chatham House rules.

We welcome managers and staff of Japanese companies who are drafting the MSA Statement for the first time, and/or, who want to know how a company can improve their MSA Statement from their previous one, to best meet the legal requirements.

Target participants:
Managers and staff who are in charge of drafting the MSA Statement at companies (possibly from Legal, Procurement, CSR, Human Resources, General Affairs, Human Rights department)

Up to: 7 companies, 3 people can attend from each company

Price:
500,000 JPY (about 3,254GBP) per each company (tax is not included). The price includes a written review and feedback for your draft/previous MSA statement (up to 5 pages).

The workshop will include recommendations for improvements and reference to best practice.

English and Japanese (consecutive translator will be provided)

Agenda:

1.Introduction to the Modern Slavery Act, and its trends (50 mins)

2.What a MSA statement should include, with some cases (25 mins)

3.Feedback session for companies’ draft (pre-submission required) (75 mins)
a. 15 mins to review the feedback
b. 35 mins to share companies’ comments on the feedback, and/or raise
questions
c. 15 mins to provide an explanation on best practice
d. 10 mins to advise 3 key next steps on how a company will implement
what the company is saying in its statements

Presenters:

Colleen Theron, Director, Ardea International
Specialist modern slavery expert, environmental, business and human rights lawyer. Founder and Director of Ardea International, a niche consultancy supporting organisations on environmental, business and human rights and modern slavery issues in supply chains. Tri-qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales, Scotland and South Africa.
Colleen has been actively providing advice to companies who face modern slavery risks in the UK and was involved with the consultation of the draft Bill and MSA TISC (Transparency in Supply Chains Clause) provisions and the draft Guidance and has contributed to the Australian parliamentary enquiry to stablish a modern slavery act in Australia. In 2016, Colleen was nominated in her capacity as director of Ardea International (previously known as CLT envirolaw) for an award at the Anti Slavery Awards ceremony for her contribution towards raising awareness of modern slavery. She is a regular contributor to the legal and professional press and her publications are available at www.ardeainternational.com

Miho Okada, Director, Caux Round Table Japan
Miho joined Caux Round Table Japan in 2009, and has led in developing CRT’s global network, , organising a platform which is consists of companies/CSO/academics in Japan, and creating services and programmes for Japanese companies mainly to support companies to implement ‘Business and Human Rights’. She holds a MSt from the Institute for Sustainability Leadership in Cambridge University, and MA from Waseda University. She is currently Managing Director of Caux Round Table Japan, Board Member at Bluenumber and Managing Director of TraceBlue Japan.
